ITDA and Micro Projects

Malkangiri ITDP was established in the year 1974-75 as per the TSP Guidelines which was registered as ITDA in the year 1979 under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. ITDA, Malkangiri comprises of one revenue Sub-Division, seven Tahasil areas, 7 Blocks namely Mathili, Khairput, Kudumuluguma, Malkangiri, Korkunda, Podia & Kalimela, 111 GPs and 1055 villages. Two micro projects such as Bonda Development Agency (BDA) at Khairput Block and Didayi Development Agency (DDA) at Kudumuluguma Block are also operating within the ITDA. Its area spreads over Koraput in the East, Chhattisgarh in the West, Jeypore in the North and Andhra Pradesh in the South. The total geographical area of the ITDA is 1790.37sq.km. The ITDA is situated within 170 45’N to 180 40’N Latitude and 810 10’E to 820 E Longitude. The geographical division of Malkangiri consists of Mountainous Terrain and Flat valley area. Malkangiri and the whole ITDA area have long historic part, known as Malyabanta depicted in the epic of Ramayan. The ITDA area is crisscrossed by a number of rivers such as Saberi, Silleru, Potteru and Machhkund.

The total forest area of the ITDA is about 1448sq.km. The Maximum temperature of the area ranges from 470-C to 490 -C and the minimum temperature recorded at 110.2C in winter. On an average 98 days of rainfall is recorded in a year. The soil type of the ITDA area is Black, Sandy &Clay. The major crops grown in the ITDA area are paddy, ragi, til & black gram etc.

As per 2011 Census, the total households of the ITDA area is 127691 and total population is 570389 (Male-281243 & Female-289146) out of which ST population is 347489 (Male -168060 & Female-179489). The average household size is 4. The Growth rate of the total population of the area (2001-11) is 21.46% out of which ST growth rate is (22.53%). As per 2011 census the total sex ratio is 1028 females per 1000 males where as in case of ST it is 1068. The total literacy rate (2011 Census) of the population residing in the ITDA area is 46.84%, whereas the ST literacy rate is 34.79%. Koya, Paroja, Bhumia, Kandha, Gadaba, Didayi, Bonda, Dharua are the major tribal communities living in the project area.

Micro Project: Bonda Development Agency, Mudulipada

Bonda Development Agency, Mudulipada was established in the year (1976-1977) during 5th Five Year Plan (1974-79) and registered under Society Registration Act, 1860 and its head quarters is located at Mudulipada of Malkangiri district. It is located 25 kms away from Khairput Block of Malkangiri District. Presently it is functioning in its own Building at Mudulipada. It is spread over 4 GPs in Khairput Blocks of Malkangiri District. The Bonda Development Agency, Mudulipada is situated between 18˚. 15’ to 18˚.30’N Latitude and 82˚.15’ to 82˚.30’E Longitude. The total geographical area of the project is 130.00sq.kms. The average annual rain fall of the project area ranges between 60 mm to 70 mm per year. The remaining months fall to the winter during which the climate is extremely cold. The summer starts from the middle of March and continues till the end of May and the temperature during this period varies from 13˚-C to 30˚-C. The type of soil found in the area is Red Lateritic Soil Group.

It covers 1819 Households in 32 villages with a total population of 7098 (3279 male & 3819 female). Their growth rate is (from 2010-15) 10.51% and the sex ratio is 1165 per 1000 male. The density of population of the area is 55 per sq.kms and the average household size is 4. The total literacy rate of the Bonda is 24.74%. The literacy rate for male is 27.75% and the female literacy rate is 22.15%. Remo-Bonda-a Munda Language is their mother tongue. They basically depend on settled cultivation, shifting cultivation, hunting, fishing, agricultural labour and MFP collection. They are having scattered housing pattern. They observe Chait Parab, Pusa Parab. Their major dance forms are Giagige Dance, Susgige Dance, Sumegelilak Dance and Genergige Dance.

Micro Project: Didayi Development Agency, Kudumulguma

Didayi Development Agency, Kudumuluguma was established in the year 1986-87 during 7th Five Year Plan (1985-90) and registered on 17.06.1986 under Society Registration Act, 1860 as Didayi Development Agency. Its Head Quarters is located at Kudumuluguma of Malkangiri district. Presently it is functioning in its own Building at Kudumuluguma. It is spread over 4 GPs in Kudumuluguma and Khairput Blocks of Malkangiri District. It comes under the jurisdiction of Malkangiri ITDA of Malkangiri District. The total geographical area of the project is 250sq.kms. The whole project area is divided in to three sub regions, i.e. plain area and hill area and cut off area. The area receives 79% of annual rain fall during the monsoon. Temperature increases here both during day and night from the month of January to May. The type of soil found in the area is Red Lateritic Soil Group.

It covers 1828 Households in 37 villages with a total population of 7650 (3663 male & 3987 female). Their growth rate is (from 2010-15) 5.52% and the sex ratio is 1088 per 1000 male. The density of population of the area is 31 per sq.kms and the average household size is 4. The total literacy rate of the Didayi is 44.50%. The literacy rate for male is 49.58% and the female literacy rate is 39.83%. Gata-a Munda Language is their mother tongue. They mainly depend on settled cultivation, shifting cultivation, hunting and fishing for their survival. They are having Scattered settlement pattern. They observe Lendi Pande and Bhairopuja as their major festivals. Their dance major forms are Dhemsa Dance, Danda-alia Dance, Marriage Dance and Group dance.

An overview of the demography of the tribals as a whole in the district of Malkangiri shows that as per 2011 Census, the district has 3,54,614 tribal population out of which 1,82,897 are female & 1,71,717 are male. This shows that the sex ratio favour females in the district which is 1065 female per 1000 male.

During 2011, out of Total ST Population 48.42% are male and 51.58% female. The ST Child Population of the district is 62.37% of total child population of the district. Looking at the population growth rate of tribals as per 2011 Census, there has been an increased of 22% population between 2001 and 2011 Census over a period of 10 years. The work force participation rate indicates that 53.39% population are workers. The disaggregated data reveals that while 55.92% male are workers and 51.01% female belowing to the category. Similarly, the dependancy ratio while for the total population of the district is 0.83 : 1, for the ST category it stands at 0.89:1.

Education

As regard literacy rate there has been considerable increased during the last decade. Census 2011 source that the literacy rate of the tribal population stands at 35.23% whereas the female literacy rate 26.25%.
