ITDA and Micro Projects

Nabrangpur ITDA was established on 01-04-1979 as per resolution No.5630 Dt 23.03-1979 of the erstwhile Tribal Rural Welfare Department and duly registered under Societies Registration Act vide Registration No. 15050/ 1894 of 1978-79. ITDA, Nabarangpur comprises of one revenue Sub-Division, ten Tahasils, 10 Blocks namely Chandanhandi, Debugam, Jharigaon, Kosagumda, Nandanhandi, Nabrangpur, Papadahandi, Raigarh, Tentulkhunti, Umerkote, 189 GPs and 891 villages. It is bounded by Kalahandi and Koraput districts in east and south, and Raipur and Bastar districts of Chatisgarh in the north and west respectively. The total geographical area of the ITDA is 5290.99 sq.kms. The ITDA is situated within 81 52’ to 82 53’ E longitude and 19 9’ to 20 5’ N latitude. The geographical division of Nabrangpur district falls under East Coast Plains and Hills. Entire district except Dabugan block falls under ‘Eastern Ghat High lands’ and Dabugaon block falls under Western Undulating lands.

The ITDA area is crisscrossed by river Tel which rises in the north of Nabrangpur district and forms its geographical boundary with Kalahandi district and finally unites with river Mahanadi in sonepur town. The Important river Indravati flows through Nabrangpur and beyond till it merges with the Godavari in Andhra Pradesh. The total forest area of the ITDA is about 2462.73 sq.kms. The Maximum temperature of the area ranges from 43.5-C to 40.5 -C and the minimum temperature recorded is at 11⁰.2C in winter. On an average 98 days of rainfall is recorded in a year. The soil type of the ITDA area is Red and Laterite. The major crops grown in the ITDA area are paddy, maize, til, mung, biri, kulthi, ground nut and mustard etc.

As per 2011 Census, the total households of the ITDA area are 273423 and total population is 1161993 (Male-575229 & Female-586764) out of which ST population is 674770 (Male -331887 & Female-342883). The average household size is 4. The Decadal growth rate of the total population of the area (2001-11) is 24.26% out of which ST growth rate is 21.68%. The total sex ratio is 1020 females per 1000 males where as in case of ST it is 1033. The total literacy rate of the ITDA is 44.60%, whereas the ST literacy rate is 38.33%. Paroja, Bhumia, Kandha, Gadaba, Gond, Holva, Dharua,Omanatya are the major tribal communities living in this project area.

An overview of the demography of the tribals as a whole in the district of Nabrangpur shows that as per 2011 Census, the district has 6,81,173 tribal population out of which 3,46,145 are female & 3,35,028 are male. This shows that the sex ratio favour of the females in the district which is 1019 female per 1000 male.

As per 2011 Census, out of Total ST Population of the district, 49.18 % are male and 50.81 % are female. The ST Child Population of the district is 59.96 % of total child population of the district. Looking at the population growth rate of tribals as per 2011 Census, there is an increase of 21% population between 2001 and 2011 Census over a period of 10 years. The work force participation rate indicates that 50.04% population are workers. The disaggregated data reveals that 56.58% and 46.82% are male and female workers respectively. Similarly, the dependancy ratio of the total population of the district is 0.80: 1, for the ST category it stands at 0.86:1.

Education

During the last decade the literacy rate has been considerably increased. According to Census 2011 the literacy rate of the tribal population stands at 38.54 % whereas the female literacy rate is 28.02%.
